Read Through the Bible

A 52-week journey through Scripture.

A Word Before You Begin

Welcome to Read Through the Bible in a Year! I am so happy you have decided to join us on this adventure!

The notes that are compiled within are the result of 2020's Wednesday Night Study on zoom. These notes were never intended to be published or shared widely. As such, there may be typos or incomplete thoughts, as I was writing them to verbally communicate through a computer screen. Neither are the explanatory notes properly sourced. My sources came largely from commentaries in my library, the Bible Project by Tim Mackie, as well as books and notes from classes I took in Seminary.

Each week's readings will cover a large portion of Old Testament literature, five chapters of the New Testament, and a few Psalms. The Old Testament will be read chronologically, so there will be some skipping around so that you can understand the historical flow of God's work in creation and through the people of Israel.

Should you want to use this material devotionally, I would pray through the Psalms. Use them in your devotions in the morning. Speak them out loud in your prayer time. Meditate over the meanings of the words. Memorize a line or two a week. The Psalms are the ancient hymnal of Israel, and they are a powerful tool for us to enter into worship with God as well.

I would use the sections in the New Testament more contemplatively. Try to place yourself in the setting, imagine the author of the book writing them. Think about being in the presence of Jesus when he teaches or when he heals. Put yourself among the disciples and imagine what it must have been like to walk with Jesus. As you read, ask yourself:

• What is God communicating to me through this text?
• How can I implement these teachings in how I live?

I hope that you will read this amazing book, not just for information, but for transformation and a deeper connection with Jesus.

Should you choose to do this as a self-guided study, great! If, however, you chose to work through the Bible in a small group, I encourage you to jot down notes or thoughts during the week as you read - any questions or insights, so that you can share or query the group when you meet.

More than anything, I pray that when you read the Bible, you will feel the presence of God and find renewal in your faith journey. I am so proud of you!!

Much love,
Rev. Dr. Stephanie Caldwell
